The official trailer for Dawnguard, the first non-mod expansion to Bethesda’s open-world RPG, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, debuted today ahead of E3. It’s a good trailer.
I think I’d be a lot more excited about this if Bethesda could just get combat right in its Elder Scrolls franchise. I had a lot of problems with Skyrim, and those problems sunk in over time as the initial sheen wore off the game. But I could forgive many, if not all, of those problems if combat were more engaging. It’s a step up from Oblivion, but still leagues behind many of its contemporaries.
Vampires and vampire hunters are always fun, of course, and this looks like a pretty engaging addition to the Skyrim experience.
Dawnguard will be available for download for 1,600 Microsoft Points, or $20, on Xbox Live this summer. The PlayStation 3 and PC add-on is expected 30 days later. The expansion is considered an “add-on” or an “expansion” rather than DLC because of its scope and size.
But I’m still a lot more excited about the Dark Souls DLC coming to consoles later this year. Both expansions will be a good deal for fans of the games, giving players lots of new content for reasonable prices as opposed to much of the DLC we’ve seen recently.
